PLANTS BIOCHAR PRODUCTION SYSTEMS – OWN PRODUCTION OF BIOCHAR
How is biochar produced? Production of biochar using SPSC technology.
Biochar is the end product obtained from the carbonization (pyrolysis) of biomass at temperatures ranging from approximately 400 to 1000 degrees Celsius in the absence of oxygen. During the heating of biomass, the water is initially evaporated, and the pyrolysis process starts at around 380 degrees Celsius. This process releases synthesis gas (such as wood gas) and heat, leaving behind the biochar. Special apparatus, plants, retorts, and kilns enable the creation of optimal conditions for this process.
The higher the process temperature and duration, the higher the carbon content (C-content) and specific surface area of the resulting biochar. This guarantees a low level of remaining pollutants (tars, PAHs).
The introduction of oxygen immediately triggers oxidation (combustion). Even small amounts of oxygen cause a part of the charcoal to ignite, resulting in an increase in ash content in the produced biochar. Therefore, it is crucial for the biochar apparatus to remain airtight during pyrolysis.
The SPSC biochar retorts have been specifically designed and developed taking these requirements into account. The pyrolysis chamber is sealed and heated. The released synthesis gas is extracted from the pyrolysis zone, directed into the combustion chamber, and only ignited after the addition of oxygen (fresh air). The resulting thermal energy flows through the central tube, heating the biomass without direct contact. This allows the pyrolysis to be self-sustaining with the released synthesis gas burning in the combustion chamber, without the need for additional external energy supply and without the retort requiring constant monitoring during the process.

Get advice from the professionals
Although the demand for high-quality biochar in agriculture and other industries increases every year, and the benefits of integrating your own biochar production into the value chain are evident, there are currently only a few reputable providers of biochar production systems or apparatus. As one of the leading providers of biochar technologies, SPSC has made it its mission to develop a straightforward and efficient way to produce biochar, both in decentralized and centralized settings. SPSC biochar systems fully meet this requirement: they are professional apparatus or systems for biomass pyrolysis, capable of carbonizing various types and fractions of biomass, while being user-friendly at the same time. The development has taken into account the requirements and preferences of farmers and other users, such as the possibility of easy forklift usage or firing with firewood in batch apparatus.
Benefits of owning a biochar production with SPSC biochar technology
Having your own biochar system for biochar production, integrated into the value chain, for example, in agriculture, makes sense in many ways. It allows for the direct utilization or upgrading of generated biomass, such as green waste or wood chips, into biochar. Disposal costs are eliminated, and you obtain high-quality biochar without the need to purchase it on the open market. You become independent of potential price fluctuations and supply shortages, and most importantly, you have full control over the quality. The energy generated by the system during pyrolysis can be extracted using a heat exchanger and used for heating purposes. SPSC systems are robust and require low maintenance, resulting in low production costs for biochar.
